New contributor dronefate used a DJI Mavic Mini 2 to bring us this fantastic aerial portrait of the Persian Gulf city-state of Dubai. The video alternates between shots of the city's modern skyline and the Empty Quarter desert which surrounds it. At the 1:05 mark, there's a nice shot of Burj Khalifa, the world's tallest skyscraper, and at 1:53 you'll see the Dubai Water Canal Bridge. Other featured locations include the Marina District skyscrapers at the 2:40 mark and a nighttime timelapse sequence of the city's main highway artery.

It is hard to appreciate just how tall Dubai's skyscrapers are without some reference point. One such reference is the clouds which occasionally show up in the form of fog rolling in to the city. Top content creator and pilot Moadh Bukhash used a drone to show the city immersed in a thick blanket of fog. The aerial views of the skyscrapers towering above these clouds gives you a sense of the height to which these giants reach; the tallest (Burj Khalif) has been the world's tallest skyscraper since 2010.

Much of the excitement of Dubai can be found in its ultra-modern Marina District, a development along the Persian Gulf coast a bit to the southwest of the downtown. It's home to four of the five tallest skyscrapers in the city, the capital of its namesake emirate which is part of the United Arab Emirates. Construction of the Marina District began in earnest following the Great Recession; only the first phase is complete as of mid-2020. Possibly the only sight more impressive than the Dubai skyline during the day is the city center of this Middle Eastern metropolis viewed at night. The brilliance of thousands of electric lights emanating from a forest of some of the world's tallest buildings is truly "electric". Around the turn of the millennium, the Gulf coast city of Dubai conceived of a plan to create over 500 km (around 320 mi.) of new coastline by building three giant artificial islands in the Jumeira coastal district. Only the first of these projects - Palm Jumeirah - was actually completed; the other two projects - Palm Jebel Ali and Palm Deira - have been on hold since the 2008 financial crisis. While the UAE city of Dubai is impressive from any angle, perhaps the most impressive views of the city are of a top-down variety. The views from a drone flying near or above the tops of the skyscrapers (many of which are over 300 meters, or about 1k ft.) looking straight down on the city's street grid are truly mind-blowing. Dubai's Palm Islands project is a tribute to the power of engineering. The first of these three massive artificial islands, Palm Jumeirah, was built in the early 2000's and sports residential and resort developments. They are part of Jumeirah, a coastal area of hotels and low rise residential units. Contributor Danny Batchelor used his DJI Phantom 3 Pro drone to create an amazing aerial view of this civil engineering and architectural wonder, which is built in the shape of a gigantic palm tree.

The great Middle Eastern city of Dubai is one of the wonders of the modern world. Dubai's Burj Al Arab is one of the most recognizable buildings on the Persian Gulf city's legendary skyline. Located on an artificial island and completed in 1999, the building has an architectural height of about 1.05k ft. or around 320m. Managed by the Jumeirah chain, it is distinguished in part by its sail shape as well as its helipad.

While the most prominent skyscraper in Dubai is the Burj Khalifa Tower (the tallest building in the world since it opened), it's home to many other supertalls. Many of these are located some distance from BK, in the Marina District. The Marina is home to the next four tallest in the city, led by the Marina 101, which was completed in 2017 and stands 425 meters (just a bit under 1.4k ft.).
