I'm proud to say that Franklin County GIS has been awarded a Special Achievement in GIS (SAG) Award for 2024. For those of you not in the GIS world, I'll just tell you that it's a pretty cool thing, and we're honored.

I was honored to speak at the All-Hazards Incident Management Team Association Symposium in Atlantic City last week. What a great event all around. The men and women that serve in Incident Management Teams around our nation (and the world) have a special wiring. If you need something to help you fall asleep, here's the highlights of what I covered in my talk. https://lnkd.in/gqPquJ5P

This past week I had the great good fortune of participating in a week-long L-381 class as offered by Mission-Centered Solutions (MSC). It was as good, as substantive, and as effective a leadership training as I have ever received - and I've been through a lot of them in my 30+ year career. Indeed, I was exhausted when we were finally done with our last immersive simulation of the week. On paper, I participated as a member of the Southwest Virginia All Hazards Incident Management Team (Type-III). But the take-aways will serve me very well in my full time job with Franklin County, as well as in other aspects of my life. To put it into modern terms, I'll just say, "Four Stars...Highly Recommend!"

An interesting and fun quiz. These kinds of things are informative. Not only as a way of testing your SME KSAs, but also finding where you need to focus a little CE time.

A couple quick questions for the US GIS crowd - especially those of you in local government. Have y'all looked at the 2020 TIGER data for your jurisdiction yet, and if so, have you seen a significant change in the number of Census Blocks you have now? If you have seen a change, was it an increase or a decrease? Also, if you saw a significant change, did you have any idea your geometry was going to change so dramatically? Our county in Virginia lost about 60% of our Census Blocks with TIGER 2020.

I am proud and excited to have been welcomed onto the Southwestern Virginia (Region VI) Incident Management Team (Type III). I'm grateful that my employer, Franklin County, has the vision to see the clear benefits of my participation as part of this regional resource. I'm honored to serve the citizens of Southwestern Virginia, and I'm excited to deepen my service to Franklin County in this expanded capacity.
