When I attend #highered conferences, I always try to make an effort to see a session or two. That’s not always easy when you’re on the “vendor” side. Today I was so fortunate to learn some incredible insights on what it takes to be a great leader and supervisor. Shoutout to Anne Johnson and Matthew Henry for leading this incredible session. I couldn’t take notes fast enough. One thing Anne mentioned that I love is “people over protocol”. We need all the protocols and organizational structure in place to guide our decisions but we need to be flexible enough to call audibles for our people when appropriate. #MIDWestACAC #NDSU North Dakota State University

For the first time in history in the United States, we have five generations in the workplace. We actually have an opportunity to mentor and be mentored by each generation. We can learn how to connect with the different generations to bring our world closer together. In June 2023 I hosted a workshop for Henry County Chamber of Commerce First Annual DEI summit with Fayette and Clayton County Chamber of Commerce. The theme was Stronger Together. It was a successful summit and we left that summit stronger together. Below is a short clip of the workshop. #DEIA #DEIB #leadershipcoaching #leadershipdevelopment

I wrestle every day with choosing when to speak (and not speak) in meetings. It's a fine balance...sometimes I have to force myself to speak up, and other times I struggle to keep my thoughts to myself. This HBR article is an excellent, quick read that's packed with great reminders and advice. I love that it addresses how we can add value to a situation by both speaking and choosing not to speak.Keep in mind that sometimes (especially in a virtual environment) taking a moment at the beginning of a meeting to crack a joke or share something personal can add value, because it helps to build relationships or may provide a much-needed emotional release. How do you decide when you'll speak up in a meeting at work?

Some great advice here on both sides of the fence. Knowing when to speak up in a meeting vs. holding back or shifting your comments to a smaller group is an absolute art form.

On Friday, I'll talk about the research we're doing at Truist Leadership Institute to understand employees' learning- and development-related needs. It's not as simple as "build it and they will come," but it helps drastically when your organization anticipates that employees have differing needs and preferences. Let's discuss during SIOP's poster session - Friday 4 PM. Hope to see you there!
