Confusingly Netflix does not offer just one monthly subscription price; a subscription in the UK can set you back anywhere between £4.99 to £17.99 a month*.

Here are the current prices:

  • Ad-free “basic” subscription (not available to new subscribers): £7.99 a month. You can watch, with no adverts, on one device at a time. Downloads are permitted. This being discontinued
  • Ad-subscription: £4.99 a month. You can watch, with adverts, on one device at a time with no downloads available

  • Premium subscription: £17.99 a month. You can watch in Ultra HD where available, on four devices at a time

If you choose to add extra member slots to your account, letting people not in your household access the platform, you will pay an extra £4.99 per month per slot that you buy.

How much does a basic Netflix subscription cost in 2024?

In 2023, Netflix updated its cheapest plan, called ‘Basic’, which didn’t have any ads.

The new version costs £4.99 a month, includes adverts, and doesn’t have quite as many programmes and films to choose between.

If you were already using the old version of the basic plan, nothing changed for you initially. However, Netflix is now writing to existing subscribers telling them they will be moved to its new ‘Basic’ plan – so cheaper, but with fewer programmes and ads, from the date of their next bill renewal.

If you’re thinking of joining Netflix or coming back after a break, your choices for watching without ads are Netflix’s ‘Standard’ plan, priced at £10.99 monthly. Then, there’s the ‘Premium’ plan at £17.99 per month.

There are two Netflix subscription plans that let you watch on multiple devices. The standard subscription plan costs £10.99 a month, and lets you watch on two devices simultaneously; the “Premium” subscription plan costs £17.99 a month, and lets you watch on four devices simultaneously.

However, to add devices not in your household will cost you £4.99 as you need to add them as an “extra member”.

Extra members have their own login and password, but are paid for by the main account holder.

Does Netflix offer a student account?

At the moment, Netflix doesn’t have a student discount. If you’re a student, you’ll have to pay the standard subscription fee to watch your favourite programmes.

What are Netflix’s rules on password sharing?

In May 2023, Netflix updated its rules for password sharing. It’s okay for several people to use and share one account if they all live together. So, if you’re a family or a group of friends living in the same house, you can keep sharing your account without any issues.

But, if you share a Netflix account with a group that doesn’t live together, this is no longer allowed. At least, not for free.

You’ll need to set a “primary location,” which Netflix can figure out based on your device’s IP address.

How does Netflix stop password sharing?

Netflix can detect password sharing by analysing IP addresses, device IDs, and how accounts are used. This helps them spot shared accounts and take appropriate action.

Anyone living abroad or using a VPN, proxy or unblocker service could be banned from adding an extra slot.

How can I cancel Netflix UK?

Cancelling your Netflix account is straightforward and you won’t be charged a fee for doing so. Because you pay monthly, you will simply stop being billed at the end of the month.

You can cancel by opening your account and clicking on the account section next to your profile name. It will show an option for membership and billing. Underneath this is a grey box with the option of cancelling your subscription. Click on this and select finish cancellation.

You will get a follow-up email from Netflix confirming the day from which you will no longer be able to watch content on your account.

Remember that you do need to actively cancel your subscription; simply deleting the app will not stop you being charged every month.
