About the Kentucky Lottery

Voters approved the Kentucky Lottery in 1988.

Tickets went on sale in 1989, and retailers sold more than $5 million in instant game tickets by the end of the first day. Kentucky added Powerball in 1992 and Mega Millions in 2010.

Since 1989, the Kentucky Lottery has raised billions of dollars for the state's general fund as well as tuition grants and scholarships.

You must be 18 or older to purchase lottery tickets and redeem your winnings.

You have 180 days from the date of the draw to claim your lottery winnings.

Funds go toward educational access programs, including Kentucky Educational Excellence Scholarships and the Kentucky Higher Education Assistance Authority.

In Kentucky, you can pick from Cash Ball 225, Kentucky 5, Lucky for Life, Powerball, Mega Millions, Pick 3, and Pick 4.

Lottery winnings over $600 in Kentucky are subject to both state and federal taxes.

For prizes between $600 and $5,000, the Kentucky Lottery doesn't withhold any taxes but issues the winner a W2 tax form. Federal and state taxes are withheld for all lottery prizes over $5,000.

No. Claim forms in Kentucky are subject to open record requests. The Kentucky Lottery only releases the winner's name when responding to records requests. There is no requirement for winners to participate in any publicity events after claiming a prize.
