A spokesman for the public health service's national institute of allergy and infectious diseases says 200 prisoners have been used in the tests, conducted at the Washington clinical center of the national institutes of health. The prisoners have come from more than a dozen federal institutions. Some 15 to 25 usually are at the center at the same time.

Varying Number "It is a coming and going thing, with the number on hand often varying from day to day," the spokesman says. The prisoners receive some pay for the volunteer work and get a reduction of a few days in their sentences. They are kept under security guard but the spokesman said guarding them is not regarded as a problem. They are kept apart from other patients. The use of the prisonervolunteers is part of an intensified program announced last February by Surgeon General Luther L.

GOETHE Ghost Town Baker "Butcher, baker, stick maker." Thus ran the old nursery rhyme. A sugar pine trail passed this former baker's lonely cabin. No relatives, he We passed him working on his vegetables. He asked for help. At his fireplace he produced a box, stock certificates, bonds.

He said: "I invest through the county seat bank. Two items grow sour. I beg you, a banker, to see if anything more goes kaput." For some two hours he showed well selected holdings, properly diversified. The writer advised a few sales of probable future losses. He then said: "I never can repay you." The oversigned answered: "You can.

Whence all this wealth?" Thus came his history. His uncle was a German university's geology professor. This nephew detested school discipline and decided to run away. His uncle asked: "Where are you going?" "To Dollarika (German slang for the USA)." The uncle said: "Delay. Let me train you as a rockhound." He added: I came to California.

My father was a baker. Apprentices learned candy making. I tried California mining. No luck. WANT AD INFORMATION 3 Lines 3 Times $2.16 COPY DEADLINES Want ads accepted until 5 P.M.

Prime requirements: A technique to transmit 1,000 watts of power for up to 50 miles in usable form. A transmitter would broadcast the electrical power and it would be picked up by a receiver many miles away. Experimental devices, hampered by low efficiency, already have been tested.

Account Or No Account Ever wait for a bank teller to look up your account so he would know whether you had enough money to cover your check? To solve this, computers have been put to work in a new system, that would be located right in front of the teller and would provide him the desired information in two fifths of a second. Dan M. Bowers of the Computer Control Company, Framingham, described, the system last week to the Institute of Radio Engineers. It he said, check the last transaction, even though it occurred only five seconds before. The first model, to handle eventually 250,000 accounts, has been designed for the Provident Institution for Savings, Boston.

Termite Time Again After spring rains, when temperature and moisture are right, termites signal their presence by rising in swarms. They search out wood, paper or anything containing cellulose. Other signs: Mud tunnels built along basem*nt walls as the termites migrate to wooden structures. They look a little like flying ants, says the National Pest Control Association. But they are different.

Termites have thick bodies, no waistline, and four wings of equal length, while flying ants have rear wing shorter than those in front. Finding Port In Space A new radar system that can help find a space station and guide a chaser rocket to a rendezvous with it was described last week. The radar system, by picking up signals broadcast from the target satellite, can spot it at a distance of 60 miles, and guide the chaser rocket in to dock at speed up to 1,000 feet a second. By increasing the power, the guidance system can cover still larger distances, Howard A. Reuter of Westinghouse Air Arm Division reported to the Institute of Radio Engineers.
