Tuesday's League Two reports (2024)

Barrow 1-1 Sc*nthorpe

Robbie Gotts' second goal of the season earned Barrow a 1-1 draw and denied basem*nt-boys Sc*nthorpe only their second League Two win of the season.

Gotts struck 10 minutes from time after Barrow's leading marksman Ollie Banks saw a 74th-minute penalty saved by Rory Watson.

Barrow hit the bar late on through Josh Gordon but a home win would have been harsh on Neil Cox's strugglers.

They won a second-minute penalty after Mark Ellis brought down Myles Hippolyte.

Hippolyte scored from the spot in United's only win of the season against Tranmere but this time Ryan Loft took on the responsibility but pulled his shot wide.

However, visiting skipper George Taft hit the target three minutes from half-time to give United a deserved lead.

Taft's header from Hayden Hackney's corner was his first in two years and first for the club.

Barrow were far better in the second half but only sparked into life in the final 20 minutes.

Watson's stop from Banks looked to have won the game until Gotts popped up with the equaliser.

Bradford City 1-3 Hartlepool

Former Bradford loanee Mark Cullen scored twice against his old club as Hartlepool secured their first away win of the season with a 3-1 victory at Valley Parade.

Hartlepool, who had previously gained only one point from six away matches since winning promotion back to the EFL at the end of last season, shook Bradford with a goal after 50 seconds.

Goalkeeper Richard O'Donnell failed to hold a shot from Gavan Holohan and Cullen seized on the loose ball to score from close range.

Luke Molyneux went close to adding to Hartlepool's lead when his angled shot flashed just wide of the far post.

Bradford enjoyed plenty of possession, but the nearest they came to scoring in the first half was just before the interval when Charles Vernam forced Ben Killip to make a diving save.

The Bantams pressed hard at the start of the second half to try to get back in the game, but they suffered another blow when Hartlepool increased their lead in the 60th minute with a close-range header from Cullen.

Defender Paudie O'Connor gave Bradford hope when he scored with far-post header from Callum Cooke's corner in the 72nd minute, but Hartlepool put the result beyond doubt with a third goal in the 90th minute.

Defender Yann Songo'o turned substitute Reagan Ogle's cross into his own net to end Bradford's unbeaten home record.

Colchester 1-1 Bristol Rovers

A late equaliser from substitute Noah Chilvers rescued Colchester a 1-1 draw against Bristol Rovers, who finished the League Two contest with nine men.

Chilvers' fine 88th-minute strike from the edge of the area earned the Essex side a draw, after Charlie Daniels' set-piece had only been partially cleared.

Colchester striker Freddie Sears was denied by goalkeeper James Belshaw early on.

In first-half stoppage-time, Shamal George pushed Brett Pitman's effort onto the inside of a post, with the Colchester goalkeeper gathering the ball after it had rolled along the goal-line.

Joey Barton's visitors took a 58th-minute lead through Pitman, whose flicked header at the near post from Antony Evans' corner flew past George and in.

The visitors nearly doubled their lead four minutes later when Alfie Kilgour wastefully blasted over.

Rovers' Cian Harries was shown a second yellow card for time-wasting in the 87th minute.

And after Chilvers netted, Rovers substitute Trevor Clarke and Colchester right-back Junior Tchamadeu were both dismissed for violent conduct, as the spoils were shared.

Crawley 1-3 Exeter

Second-half goals from Matt Jay, Nigel Atangana and Sam Nombe gave Exeter a 3-1 victory at 10-man Crawley.

The hosts, who had led through Kwesi Appiah's header, had striker Ashley Nadesan dismissed for two bookable offences before half-time as they went down to back-to-back defeats.

Exeter boss Matt Taylor made four changes and the recalled Jake Caprice tested veteran keeper Glenn Morris early on after a penetrating run.

Captain Jay had a shot blocked for City before Morris held a close-range header by Archie Collins.

City keeper Cameron Dawson was caught out of position as Crawley broke the deadlock in the 31st minute.

Striker Appiah headed his fourth goal of the season at the far post after Nadesan, released by Tom Nichols, got the better of Dawson towards the corner flag.

Crawley were reduced to 10 men just before the break when Nadesan, booked earlier for a foul, was shown a second yellow card.

Appiah put a good chance wide for Crawley before Exeter scored twice inside two minutes.

Jay thundered his seventh goal of the season from the edge of the box in the 54th minute before Atangana forced the ball in from close range to give the Grecians the lead.

Striker Nombe sealed City's victory in the last minute by firing his sixth goal in six games from close range in front of 357 travelling fans.

Harrogate 2-2 Tranmere

Harrogate extended their unbeaten home run to 10 games and kept fellow high-fliers Tranmere below them in the League Two table following an entertaining 2-2 draw.

The visitors led through a Jay Spearing penalty before a Jack Muldoon spot-kick and Luke Armstrong's eighth goal of the season put the Sulphurites in the ascendancy, only for Kieron Morris to secure a share of the spoils.

Harrogate captain Josh Falkingham cleared an early Sam Foley chance off the line, but Tranmere went ahead just past the half-hour mark when Jack Diamond tripped Josh Dacres-Cogley, and Spearing found Mark Oxley's bottom-right corner.

The Sulphurites levelled in the 40th minute after Will Smith had his shirt tugged by Tom Davies, and Muldoon beat Tranmere goalkeeper Ross Doohan.

Early in the second half, Alex Pattison forced a parry from Doohan and from the loose ball George Thomson set up Armstrong, who headed in from six yards.

But Rovers were back on terms within four minutes as home defender Warren Burrell turned a Josh Hawkes cross against Oxley's right-hand post and Morris pounced from eight yards.

Callum McManaman went closest to winning the game for the visitors late on when he sidefooted against the bar.

Leyton Orient 1-1 Forest Green

Forest Green retained their four-point lead at the top of League Two as they were held to a 1-1 draw at Leyton Orient.

A compelling contest at Brisbane Road finished with the spoils shared after Matty Stevens had opened the scoring for the visitors before Orient substitute Ruel Sotiriou levelled to record a third-straight draw for the hosts.

Both goals came in the second half after two well-organised defences ensured a first-half deadlock in a lively contest.

The visitors came closest to finding the net when a Stevens effort for the table-toppers in the 16th minute was cleared off the line by O's midfielder Hector Kyprianou.

Orient midfielder Paul Smyth found the side netting with a left-footed volley following a kick by home goalkeeper Lawrence Vigouroux but it was after the interval when the game really sprung to life.

Stevens notched his seventh league goal of the campaign when, unmarked, he ran onto a Ben Stevenson corner after 68 minutes to power a header into the back of the net.

But the home side responded positively eight minutes later with a counter-attack.

Dan Kemp raced clear and fed a delightful pass through to Sotiriou, who drilled his well-placed shot low into the far corner of the net to earn a deserved point.

Mansfield 1-1 Port Vale

Struggling Mansfield turned in a much-improved performance against Port Vale but a draw saw their run without a win stretch to 13 games.

Mansfield put Vale under a lot of pressure in the first half-hour without testing the keeper.

But after James Wilson had sent a stooping header just wide as a warning on 26 minutes, the visitors swept ahead on 33 minutes.

Vale skipper Tom Conlon sent a delicious free-kick over the wall and under the right angle from a central position 20 yards out.

In reply, Rhys Oates fired over and Stephen Quinn forced Lucas Covolan to tip over before Oates won a penalty from Dan Jones' challenge on 42 minutes.

But Covolan guessed correctly and saved low to his right.

Stags continued to press and were rewarded on 64 minutes as George Lapslie turned home Jordan Bowery's low pull back from the left by-line.

Quinn though he'd won a second penalty on 66 minutes when he was pushed from behind by David Worrall, but nothing was given.

Another Conlon free-kick hit the top of the home bar on 80 minutes.

Newport 2-2 Carlisle

New manager James Rowberry watched from the stands as nine-man Newport County drew with Carlisle United.

Second-from bottom Carlisle led after just 45 seconds thanks to Joe Riley.

Newport's Dom Telford struck from the edge of the box to equalise and three minutes later his fine run and finish put the hosts 2-1 up.

But Carlisle levelled with Zach Clough's second-half penalty after Ed Upson was sent off for handball, before Ryan Haynes received a second booking.

That left Newport hanging on in the closing stages but, thanks to a flurry of superb saves by goalkeeper Joe Day, they earned a point which lifts them up to 13th in the League Two table, three points adrift of the play-off places.

Earlier on Tuesday, the Exiles had announced the appointment of former Cardiff City first-team coach Rowberry as successor to Mike Flynn, who left earlier this month after almost five years in charge.

This was the fourth and final league game of Wayne Hatswell's temporary reign, and Telford's two excellent goals looked set to give the caretaker boss a second victory with the Exiles well on top at the break.

But Upson's red card for using his hand to deflect a goalbound shot - and Clough's subsequent penalty - changed the complexion of the match.

Carlisle, who are still without a permanent manager after sacking Chris Beech, came back strongly after the break and created several chances but Day's saves meant they had to settle for a point which keeps them 23rd in the table.

Northampton 3-0 Stevenage

Northampton registered back-to-back League Two home wins with a routine victory over lowly Stevenage.

Kion Etete and Sam Hoskins struck in the first half, before Fraser Horsfall made the game safe in the second as the home side moved into the play-off positions.

After a quiet opening 33 minutes, Northampton broke the deadlock when Mitch Pinnock sent Etete racing away on goal and his low shot squirmed through the fingers of visiting goalkeeper Joseph Anang.

Lifted by the goal, the Cobblers went in search of another and got it late in the first half through Hoskins, who was on hand to poke in the rebound after Pinnock had robbed Luther James-Wildin and stung the palms of Anang.

Northampton remained the dominant force after half-time and Horsfall headed in a third on 63 minutes, getting up superbly to convert Pinnock's corner and end the game as a contest.

Oldham 1-3 Walsall

Two quickfire goals shortly before half-time helped Walsall on their way to a League Two victory at Oldham.

The improving Saddlers extended their unbeaten run to four matches.

Walsall threatened first when Tyrese Shade fired wide from 20 yards.

Oldham striker Zak Dearnley then volleyed an chance off target as he darted in to meet Jack Stobbs' cross.

The Saddlers went ahead against the run of play after 34 minutes.

Conor Wilkinson set up Jack Earing, who curled home a sweet effort from the edge of the box.

The lead was doubled nine minutes later when Emmanuel Osadebe's shot was deflected into the path of George Miller, and he tucked the ball home from eight yards.

Stephen Ward's long-range strike came close to making it three for Walsall shortly after the restart.

Oldham halved the deficit after 67 minutse when early substitute Hallam Hope headed home Jamie Bowden's corner kick.

However, Osadebe sealed Walsall's win five minutes from time when he slid home a low strike after pouncing on a misunderstanding in the hosts' defence.

Salford 0-0 Rochdale

Salford City and Rochdale shared the spoils as their first ever league derby ended goalless.

The Ammies, looking for a second successive home win in the space of four days, started promisingly with a Conor McAleny effort narrowly wide of the target early on.

Brandon Thomas-Asante then produced the first shot on target when his powerful low strike forced a smart save from Dale stopper Joel Colman.

Salford should have taken advantage of their first half dominance shortly before the interval, but both Matty Willock and McAleny failed to convert.

A reinvigorated Rochdale sparked to life after the restart with George Broadbent spurning a glorious chance for an opener, while Conor Ripley was twice drawn into action.

Inspired by the influential Ash Hunter, the home side returned into the ascendency with Thomas-Asante again testing Coleman and Tom Elliott heading narrowly over the target.

Former Ammie Jake Beesley had an opportunity to snatch a late winner but ultimately neither side could break the deadlock.

Sutton 1-2 Swindon

Sutton's League Two winning run came to a frustrating end with a defeat at home to Swindon, who moved up to third as a result.

Matt Gray saw his side's four-game winning streak at Gander Green Lane ended after sensational first-half strikes from Louis Reed and Jonny Williams.

Harry Beautyman hit back with a penalty six minutes before the break but the U's failed to snatch a point.

Swindon sprinted out of the blocks fastest as Harry McKirdy forced Dean Bouzanis into a great early save.

But there was absolutely nothing he could do to keep out Reed's 17th-minute free-kick.

It was almost two, four minutes later as McKirdy hit the post after jumping on a defensive error.

Williams smashed home Swindon's second on the half-hour mark with an unstoppable strike.

Beautyman reduced the arrears in the 39th minute as he stroked his penalty straight down the middle after Mathieu Baudry handled in the box.

Bouzanis denied Ellis Iandolo just before the break.

After the restart, Beautyman squandered a decent chance from a free-kick.

Ben Gladwin saw his effort tipped over by inspired Boudanis down the other end as Swindon held on to extend their unbeaten league run to six matches.
